If you plant to travel you need to know that your holiday could be an expensive disaster if you don’t have the right travel insurance. Fewer than 60 countries have reciprocal healthcare agreements with the UK.

If you are travelling in the EU then you may have some cover under the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC which replaced the E111 form in 2005) scheme for emergency treatment but the cover does vary from country to country. However you may be required to pay for medicines or your hospital bed.

KeyNote:- The EHIC includes treatment in Switzerland

KeyNote:-  You can download the application form from www.dh.gov.uk/travellers

Covering the cost of treatment abroad is very expensive, especially in the United States, and so generous policy limits for medical cover should be sought.

Some Holiday Operators insist that you take out cover but please remember that the offer of a holiday can not be conditional upon taking out their insurance.

KeyNote:- Don’t rely on the ‘free’ travel insurance which comes with some credit cards and premier bank accounts. These policies can be fairly basic and may not cover you for winter or extreme sports, so check the small print, and if necessary buy extra cover.

Existing medical conditions are not covered by Travel Insurance policies unless the condition has been disclosed to the insurer and vetted by medical screening.

For ongoing treatment within the EU contact the Department of Health and enquire about an E112.

If you are an older person it is sometimes hard to get annual cover. We can’t always help with that but please feel free to contact us with you details.

As well as restrictions on Medical Conditions if is usual for polices to exclude Dangerous Sports or activities – which can include motorcycle hire. Please make sure that you are aware of which are covered.

KeyNote:- If you are renewing an annual policy, you still need to check the small print in case the policy terms have changed.

If you are concerned about any aspect of the country you wish to visit check out the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for guidance.

Please be aware that the Financial Ombudsman Service will only be able to consider your complaint after the insurers have had the opportunity to consider and resolve this.
