This is a generic term for insurance polices that cover motor vehicles and this is `Compulsory` throughout the EU. In the UK the responsibility to insure comes from the Road Traffic Act. The Motor Vehicles (Compulsory Insurance) Regulations 2000 amended the requirement to insure and added `other public place` after the term `road. This means that if you have any self propelled vehicle, machine or plant it is our advice to ensure that you have at least `Third Party Only` insurance cover on these vehicles. If you don’t want to get your car seized by the Policy for not being show on the Motor Insurance Database [MID] you should always carry evidence of your insurance with you. For most people your insurers will put your vehicle on the MID for you but it is worth knowing that this can take up to 14 days for them to deal with that – especially if there are any changes made mid way through a policy. For business owners this process is not automatic and you should ask your insurance provider how they deal with placing your vehicles on the MID. If you want to check if your vehicle is lodged on the MID go to http://www.askmid.com.
Continuous Insurance Enforcement has grown up from European Legislation and this has led to creation of certain databases that interested parties have access to.
Information relating to your policy will be added to the Motor Insurance Database [MID] managed by the Motor Insurers’ Bureau [MIB]. MID and the data stored on it may be used by certain statutory and/or authorised bodies including the police, the DVLA, the DVA, the Insurance Fraud Bureau and other bodies permitted by law for the purposes not limited to but including:-
- Electronic Licensing
- Continuous Insurance Enforcement
- Law Enforcement (prevention, detection, apprehension and or prosecution of offenders)
- The provision of government services and or other services aid at reducing the level and incidence of uninsured driving
